Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to join the teaching team and support the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication this coming academic year 2026 – 2027.
We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer in Chinese Mandarin for the following module/s:
The specific timings will be advised when the timetable is set. Each class is 2.5 hours and the module runs for 3 terms, 24 weeks in total.
You will have near-native knowledge of Mandarin Chinese language and simplified characters and experience of teaching Mandarin Chinese to beginners, post-beginners and intermediate levels, and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).
You will also desirably have knowledge of traditional/orthodox characters as well as knowledge in Sinophone cultures that are not limited to mainland China but also other Chinese-speaking regions and diaspora.
Mandarin Chinese is offered in the history of our College for the first time, so you will have the chance of contributing to the development of a growing teaching portfolio and curricula.

Remuneration:
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.
This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
Contract:
