Kitchen Assistant

• Pay Rate: £13.45 – £15.56 per hour (PAYE)
• Location: Sheffield City Council, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S5
• Job Type: Full-time, Temporary (1 – 2 months)

Sheffield City Council are looking for a dedicated Kitchen Assistant to manage all aspects of food preparation, sales, and customer service at The Heart Space Café@Sheaf, located at Sheaf Training. This role is crucial in ensuring that the café operates in line with the service requirements of Sheaf’s students and staff, promoting healthy eating and lifestyles.

Day-to-day of the role:

• Conduct opening and closing checks of the kitchen to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
• Plan and publish a healthy and nutritious menu that promotes healthy eating and addresses food obsessions amongst students with SEND.
• Manage and direct all food service operations.
• Perform weekly stock checks, place orders, and liaise with suppliers and other professionals.
• Manage the café’s accounts and present these for monthly audits to the Service Manager.
• Teach and support students in practical areas, including demonstrations and theoretical sessions in catering skills, nutrition, and healthy eating.
• Prepare the kitchen and order supplies for learner assessments.
• Manage student participation in work experience, providing education and training to enhance their practical skills.
• Ensure service delivery to staff, students, visitors, and other customers is pleasant, friendly, and professional.
• Provide room/buffet service upon request.
• Respond to complaints and queries in accordance with council policy.
• Manage cash transactions, ensuring secure handling and transit of cash daily.
• Adhere to strict guidelines set by Environmental Health and other relevant organisations, ensuring compliance with health and safety laws.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Experience in kitchen management or food service operations.
• Strong understanding of health and safety regulations, including COSHH and HACCP.
• Ability to plan and execute a nutritious menu.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Experience in educational or training roles is advantageous.
• Ability to manage financial accounts and perform audits.
